Winter gardening jobs

Winter may feel quiet in the garden, but January and February are perfect months to prepare for a healthy and productive year ahead. Here are five easy, worthwhile gardening jobs you can tackle even in the colder months:

  • Prune dormant trees, shrubs and roses
Winter is the best time to prune many deciduous trees, fruit trees (like apples and pears), and rose bushes while they’re dormant. Pruning now improves air flow, encourages strong spring growth, and helps prevent disease. Avoid pruning if there’s a hard frost forecast.
  • Prepare soil and improve beds
If the ground isn’t frozen or waterlogged, add well-rotted manure or garden compost to borders and vegetable beds. This improves soil structure and fertility, giving plants a strong start when temperatures rise.
  • Clean, sharpen and organise tools
January and February are ideal for garden maintenance. Clean mud and sap from tools, sharpen secateurs and mower blades, and oil wooden handles. Well-maintained tools make spring jobs quicker, safer and more enjoyable.
  • Protect plants from frost and wildlife
Use fleece, cloches or straw to protect tender plants during cold snaps. Check that tree ties are secure after winter winds, and protect young trees and shrubs from rabbits and deer where necessary.
  • Plan and sow early seeds under cover
Use the quieter months to plan your garden layout and order seeds. Hardy vegetables such as onions, broad beans and early lettuce can be sown indoors or in a greenhouse, giving you a head start on the growing season.

A little effort in winter can make a big difference later in the year. These small, manageable gardening jobs help keep your garden healthy, organised and ready for spring 🌱
